Applications are now open for the 2026 Second Intake of the Japan–Taiwan Exchange Association (JTEA) Scholarship for Short-Term Exchange Students.

Students currently enrolled at universities that have formal exchange agreements with Japanese universities, graduate schools, junior colleges, or colleges of technology are eligible to apply, regardless of academic discipline. This scholarship aims to promote academic exchange between Taiwan and Japan, enhance educational and research standards, and foster mutual understanding and friendship.

The program primarily supports students conducting research related to Japan and completing their degree with a thesis focused on Japan-related topics.

I. Number of Awards

Approximately 13 recipients

II. Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

  1. Be under 35 years of age (born on or after April 2, 1991).
  2. Be enrolled as a full-time student at a Taiwanese university (undergraduate, master’s, or doctoral level) throughout the scholarship period starting from September 1, 2026.
  3. Not exceed the standard duration of study at the time of commencing the exchange (extended study students are not eligible).
  4. For Humanities and Social Sciences majors:
    Applicants must be engaged in Japan-related research (e.g., politics, diplomacy, economic policy, business, law, history, or literature), or participating in collaborative research with Japanese institutions, and must complete a thesis based on their research in Japan.
  5. For Natural Sciences majors (science, engineering, agriculture, medicine):
    Applicants must be engaged in Japan-related research or collaboration with Japanese institutions and demonstrate how the exchange experience will contribute to education and research in Taiwan upon return.

III. Scholarship Duration and Benefits

  • Duration: From the start of study in Japan (enrollment date), for up to one year (maximum until September 2027)
  • Monthly stipend: JPY 80,000

IV. Application Procedure

Applicants must submit the required documents to the Office of International Affairs (1st Floor) by 12:00 PM on June 1, 2026 (Monday).

Required Documents:

  1. Application Form (Form 1)
  2. Official academic transcripts issued within the past three months
    • Undergraduate: transcripts from first year to present
    • Master’s: transcripts from current program + undergraduate transcripts
    • Doctoral: transcripts from current program + undergraduate and master’s transcripts
  3. Letter of Recommendation (Form 3)
  4. Copy of the Letter of Admission from the host Japanese institution (may be submitted later if not yet available)
  5. Copy of passport (personal data page and entry/exit record pages)
    • If no passport has been issued, a declaration must be provided
  6. Research proposal related to Japan (in Japanese or English, within 3 pages, A4 format)
  7. Supporting research outputs (if applicable), such as thesis abstracts, conference papers, or portfolio materials

Submission Requirements:

  • Submit one original and one copy (two sets total), arranged in order and clipped (no stapling)

Important Notes

  • Official application forms must not be altered in format or font.
  • Application Form (Form 1) must be handwritten in black ink (basic information may be in Chinese; Sections 1–7 must be completed in Japanese or English).
  • Recommendation letters written in Chinese must include a Japanese or English translation.
  • The Letter of Admission must indicate an enrollment period starting after September 2026 and lasting less than one year.
  • Research proposals must be written in Japanese or English (Chinese submissions will not be accepted).
