Chemical Disaster Prevention Education Reaches the Community: NYUST Partners with Local Communities to Build a Sustainable Green Living Model

To enhance public awareness of chemical disaster prevention and promote sustainable green living, the Environmental Incident Response Consultation Center at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (NYUST) held the 2026 Green Living Chemical Disaster Prevention Education Outreach Event on June 27, 2026, at the Mailiao Social Education Park in Yunlin County’s Mailiao Township. The event attracted more than 600 participants and featured educational activities on chemical disaster prevention and green living, along with a family-friendly interactive experience zone. Through hands-on activities, scenario-based games, and engaging educational exhibits, professional disaster prevention knowledge was transformed into practical, easy-to-understand content, enabling participants of all ages to learn how to protect themselves while supporting environmental sustainability.

Organized by the Environmental Incident Response Consultation Center, the event was jointly supported by the Ministry of Environment’s Chemicals Administration, the Taiwan Chemical Safety Management Association, and other partner organizations. The collaboration demonstrated the successful integration of expertise from central government agencies, academia, local communities, and non-governmental organizations in promoting disaster prevention education. Guided by the theme of “Public Participation, Everyday Practice,” the event adopted an interactive, educational approach to encourage participants to incorporate disaster preparedness and environmental responsibility into their daily lives, thereby strengthening community resilience.

Mailiao Social Education Park, which received a Gold Award at the 2025 London Design Awards, combines local history and culture with contemporary architectural design. The park’s open public spaces, particularly the Lifestyle Aesthetics Center, have become an important gathering place for local residents. As an educational venue that integrates regional cultural characteristics with sustainability concepts, the park provides an ideal setting for bringing environmental education into the community, encouraging meaningful learning that inspires both personal reflection and practical action.

The event featured eight themed activity stations, including “Green Chemistry Treasure Hunt: Carbon Reduction in Manufacturing,” “Food Safety Source Management,” “Household Environmental Chemical Safety,” “Chemical Disaster Evacuation and Shelter Education,” “AR Digital Disaster Prevention Experience,” “Understanding Chemical Hazard Pictograms,” “Chemical Disaster Mobile Game Experience,” and “Detection Equipment Demonstration.” Through game-based learning and interactive activities, participants gained practical knowledge of chemical hazards, disaster prevention and emergency response measures, and environmental protection. The activities also highlighted the importance of green chemistry, source reduction, and risk management. In addition, booths promoting green consumption and household disaster preparedness encouraged participants to adopt environmentally friendly habits, such as choosing eco-friendly products and reducing the use of disposable items, helping to foster more sustainable lifestyles.

Beyond the educational stations, the event also featured a family-oriented activity area with interactive experiences, scenario-based games, and traditional Taiwanese childhood games, including pinball tables, sand art, ring toss, and pitch-pot games. These activities attracted many families and created a lively atmosphere for community engagement. A highlight of the event was the protective equipment experience, where participants learned about the functions and correct use of gas masks through guided demonstrations, hands-on practice, and simulated disaster scenarios. By combining traditional games with environmental education and practical safety training, the event enabled participants of different age groups to engage with disaster prevention and sustainability topics in an enjoyable and memorable way, helping to integrate green living and disaster preparedness into everyday life while fostering greater awareness of sustainability and community resilience.

The event also promoted the principles of Green Living, encouraging environmentally responsible choices in green dining, green travel, green homes, and green consumption. Participants were encouraged to reduce carbon emissions through practical actions in all aspects of daily life—including food, clothing, housing, transportation, education, and recreation—demonstrating how small lifestyle changes can collectively contribute to environmental protection. These efforts support Taiwan’s 2050 Net-Zero Emissions policy objectives. As climate change and environmental risks continue to intensify, strengthening disaster preparedness must go hand in hand with advancing sustainable development, environmental protection, and widespread public participation in green living to build a more resilient society.

Distinguished guests attending the event included Deputy Minister Yen-Ju Hsieh of the Ministry of Environment, Director-General Meng-Yu Tsai of the Ministry of Environment’s Chemicals Administration, Mailiao Township Mayor Chung-Fu Hsu, and Chairman Tung-Ho Lin of Mailiao Gongfan Temple. They interacted warmly with participants and jointly emphasized the importance of chemical disaster prevention, environmental protection, and green living in creating a safe and sustainable living environment.

According to Dr. Horng Jao-Jia, Director of the Environmental Incident Response Consultation Center, the Center has been dedicated to chemical disaster prevention and emergency response for more than twenty years. During this time, it has established three specialized chemical disaster response teams, trained more than 6,500 certified professionals, and assisted government agencies and industry partners in providing educational and professional training to over 28,000 participants. Looking ahead, the Center will continue integrating disaster prevention education, green living, and sustainable development through diverse outreach initiatives and partnerships with local communities, ensuring that environmental protection and disaster preparedness become deeply embedded throughout society while contributing to the creation of a safer, lower-carbon, and more sustainable future.
