Intensifying Competition in Asian Higher Education: YunTech Remains Taiwan’s No. 2 University of Science and Technology
Times Higher Education (THE) recently released the Asia University Rankings 2026. This year’s rankings included 929 universities from 36 countries and regions across Asia. The evaluation framework covers five major areas—teaching, research environment, research quality, international outlook, and industry—using 18 performance indicators for comprehensive assessment.
The latest results reflect the increasingly competitive landscape of higher education in Asia. Universities from China, Singapore, Japan, and Hong Kong continue to dominate the top tiers, while higher education institutions in Southeast Asia are also steadily strengthening their presence. This year, 14 Taiwanese universities ranked among Asia’s top 200, demonstrating Taiwan’s continued competitiveness in the regional higher education sector.
National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (YunTech) ranked 143rd in Asia this year, placing 10th among Taiwanese institutions and firmly maintaining its position as Taiwan’s No. 2 university of science and technology. At a time when Taiwan’s top-ranking institutions are largely comprehensive universities, medical universities, and major research-intensive universities, YunTech’s continued placement within the nation’s top ten highlights the university’s long-term commitment to technological and vocational education, industry-academia collaboration, applied research, and sustainable governance, as well as the resilience of its institutional development.
In terms of individual performance indicators, YunTech’s overall score increased from 49.3 to 50.3 this year, reflecting steady institutional progress. Among the key indicators, “Research Quality” improved from 72.1 to 75.5, while “Industry” rose from 76.3 to 79.9. Scores in both “Research Environment” and “International Outlook” also showed year-on-year growth. These results demonstrate YunTech’s continued achievements in academic impact, applied research outcomes, industry-academia collaboration, knowledge transfer, and international engagement, further reflecting the university’s educational philosophy centered on practical application, industrial linkage, and next-generation talent cultivation.
President Chuan-Yu Chang stated that YunTech has long emphasized “innovative teaching aligned with industry needs” as a core institutional characteristic, while actively advancing precision education, industry-academia collaboration, sustainable campus development, international exchange, and smart governance. He noted that the latest ranking results demonstrate YunTech’s ability to maintain a leading position among Taiwan’s universities of science and technology amid increasingly intense competition in Asian higher education. The achievement reflects the long-term dedication of the university’s faculty, staff, and administrative teams, as well as YunTech’s success in transforming the strengths of technological and vocational education into international competitiveness.
President Chang further emphasized that, in response to the rapidly evolving higher education environment, YunTech will adopt the vision of becoming a “responsible intelligent university” as the next phase of institutional development. The university will continue integrating AI and digital governance into institutional decision-making, teaching innovation, research development, and administrative services. At the same time, YunTech will further strengthen interdisciplinary learning, industry-academia-research collaboration, and international engagement to better address industrial transformation, student needs, and broader sustainability challenges facing society.
President Chang also stressed that while rankings serve as an important reference for evaluating a university’s international visibility, YunTech places even greater emphasis on transforming educational achievements into talent cultivation, knowledge innovation, and industrial contribution. Moving forward, the university will continue building upon the practical spirit of technological and vocational education to deepen its capacities in teaching, research, industry collaboration, and sustainable development, ensuring that YunTech is not only recognized in international rankings, but also continues creating meaningful value for local communities, industry, and the competitiveness of Taiwan’s higher education sector.
