The 2025 Overseas Visit for Outstanding Student Club Leaders of National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (YunTech) was held from November 16 to 20, led by Dean of Student Affairs Lin Lan-Tung and Section Chief of the Extracurricular Activities Section Huang Chen-Yuan.
A total of 25 outstanding student club leaders visited Kyushu, Japan, for club-related activities, cultural exploration, and academic exchanges.
These 25 student representatives were selected from 72 elite club members who completed the application for candidacy. Through preliminary and secondary interviews, the finalists were chosen in a highly competitive selection process.
Among the representatives, President Hsu Kai-Chi of the “77 Student Companionship Club” served as Student Leader of the delegation, with Yao Guan-Yu as Deputy Student Leader.
A key highlight of this trip was that it was entirely student-managed and student-organized.
From planning the visits to executing all activities, students formed task groups based on their specialties, demonstrating exceptional competence and creativity:
-
The video team, led by Chen Ssu-Han, produced a video presented during the visit to Fukuoka University.
The video introduced YunTech’s key features and cleverly integrated club elements, with Japanese narration and Chinese subtitles. -
The design and publicity team, led by Lu Wen-An, designed a series of customized items—including a special visit logo and souvenir gifts—which greatly impressed the faculty and students at Fukuoka University.
-
The visit handbook, detailing the itinerary and reminders, was compiled by Chen Pei-Yu and her team of five.
-
The Japanese language translation team, composed of Liao Tzu-Ching and Su I-Chih, provided basic Japanese lessons to the delegation before departure.
The dedication and efforts of these students showcased the remarkable talent and creativity of YunTech’s outstanding club leaders.
Highlight of the Trip — Visit to Fukuoka University on November 18
Fukuoka University gave YunTech delegation a warm and formal welcome.
Dean Professor Tsukiyama of the Student Affairs Division led two faculty members, two representatives from the Office of International Affairs, and 24 student club leaders to meet the YunTech group.
The visit included:
-
Screening of introduction videos from both universities
-
Exchange of souvenirs
-
An opening greeting delivered in Japanese by Dean Lin Lan-Tung
The speeches were conducted in a bilingual format with mutual respect—Dean Lin spoke in Chinese, followed by Japanese interpretation provided by student interpreter Liao Tzu-Ching, whose seamless cooperation demonstrated remarkable teamwork.
Following ice-breaking activities, students engaged in group discussions on three major topics:
-
Club culture
-
Club management models
-
Differences in club operations between Taiwan and Japan
Each group presented its conclusions after energetic exchanges, enabling participants from both countries to better understand similarities and differences in club management and learn from each other.
Cultural and Historical Exploration in Fukuoka and Kumamoto
Since the trip focused on the cities of Fukuoka and Kumamoto, Dean Lin guided students through visits to the Kyushu National Museum, Kokura Castle, Kumamoto Castle, and Fukuoka Castle Ruins, explaining the historical context and architectural details of various heritage sites.
With the support of professional local guides, students deepened their appreciation for historical relics and cultural assets.
The reconstruction of Kumamoto Castle, severely damaged in the 2016 earthquake, left a strong impression.
The disaster caused tens of thousands of stone walls to collapse and severely damaged many cultural assets.
The restored main keep reopened in 2021, but many numbered stones still await reconstruction—a testament to Japan’s dedication to its cultural heritage.
Complete restoration is expected to continue until 2030, giving students an invaluable firsthand experience of cultural preservation.
Geological Learning at Aso Volcano
Aso Volcano provided an excellent opportunity to learn about Japan’s volcanic terrain and the challenges of coexisting with active volcanoes.
Braving the cold wind, students hiked toward the crater, observing rising plumes of smoke and diverse plant life along the way.
They found blooming miniature azaleas and autumn-red leaves, which encouraged them to push forward despite fatigue.
The vast grasslands, known as Kusasenri, left a lasting impression.
At the Aso Volcano Museum, students viewed volcanic stones, seasonal photographs, and interactive exhibits—including photos taken just days earlier—demonstrating Japan’s real-time monitoring and strong commitment to volcano research.
Industrial and Cultural Experiences
Japan is world-renowned for its automotive industry.
During the visit to the NISSAN exhibition center, Section Chief Huang provided professional insights from the perspective of industrial management, helping students understand the keys to Japan’s automotive success and Nissan’s vision for electrification, intelligence, and connected mobility.
For local cultural appreciation, the group visited a mentaiko (spicy cod roe) factory, one of Fukuoka’s specialties and an iconic cultural delicacy.
Students watched an animated introduction, followed by observing the production process through transparent windows—from roe selection to seasoning and precise packaging—paired with delicious mentaiko tasting.
A Unique Weather Experience
A cold front hit Japan during the trip, and temperatures in Kumamoto dropped to 0°C, giving the students—many from tropical regions—a special experience of Japan’s late-autumn chill.
The five-day, four-night journey enriched students with deeper understanding of Japanese culture, academics, cuisine, geology, and history.
Throughout the visit, students demonstrated strong autonomy and courteous behavior, successfully representing YunTech.
The delegation returned safely on the evening of November 20, marking a perfect conclusion to the trip.
