YunTech is the first university to have its own international brand name; “YunTecher.” All universities in Taiwan would like to be regarded as a top-notch university, and to be listed as such in the “NT50 billion over five years” project.

Many top universities throughout the world have their own names, which students use to identify their association. For example, Cornell University uses “Cornellian” to refer to alumni and all students who have enrolled at Cornel University. Having a name, helps people to identify their student association. This has been used extensively overseas, with the added advantage of helping collect consensus information. Furthermore, the name “YunTech” is the official website name and email correspondence name. While we have used the English abbreviated name, YunTech, since the founding of the university, it is time, in today’s multilingual community, to find a name that identifies those students who belong to our university through their enrollment and community contributions.

President Yeong-Bin Yang stated that YunTech has over 200 international students with more than 167 academic partnerships, and an identification name that can proudly identify alumni as well as current students would be ideal. Therefore, the Department of Applied Foreign Language, collated information from Taiwan’s five highest ranking higher education institutions and found that none had an identifying English name. YunTech University held a promotional event to find the most popular name; with Yuntecher voted as the most popular name.

The month long event, conducted via the internet, did not inform the students why they were selecting an English name, and a film recorded the difficulty the students had when referring to themselves. When the media interviewed the winners, no-one could find a name suitable to identify their association or connection with the university. The department director pointed out that this situation was a great example of why a ‘name’ was important.

Selecting the ‘right’ name was not easy. Some voters pointed out that “techer” sounded like “taiker” and others said that it sounded like it referred to a technician.  Others thought that the sound “ker” as sounding like a Chinese word. Therefore, members of the Student Association, Department of Applied Foreign Language, consulted with experts, and recommended adding ‘-er” at the end of the word. Adding an “-er” means that all people associated with YunTech University have a special association. As YunTech is a technological university combining theory and practice, we have professional technicians from many fields, which fits neatly with the name, “YunTecher!”

YunTech is proud to announce that a “YunTecher” is an international brand name, with global marketing agreements and that a YunTecher can register for international competitions and participate in future international events.
