The New Star for the Track and Field!

Chie Chen from the National Taiwan University of Physical Education and Sport broke the record at the National Intercollegiate Athletic Games (46.72) in the Men’s 400-meter Track and Field Final with a time of 46.67 seconds; a time which made him a celebrity on the field right away. While being interviewed, he said he had never thought he could break the record. Although he is a hurdle racer, he and his American coach did not believe he could break the record in the wet conditions on the day. He had only hoped to give it his best shot.

Since he was a junior high school student, he has been interested in track and field events. When entering senior high school and university, he focused on improving his skills. He said his father who was an athlete was against him at first. However, he became more supportive later on. Moreover, he would like to thank his mentor-Teacher Nien-chu Sun from National Dajia Senior High School. The latest sponsor he would like to thank is the Chinese Taipei Track and Field Association who provided him with the chance to train in the United States. While there, he not only learned skills for the track and field, but also about US culture. For example, people from Chinese cultures respect teachers but people from Western cultures respect everyone. Therefore, they pay attention to each athlete as well. During the training there, he found that practice and hard-work were the key points for a game even when the Americans had the advantage in terms of their height and talent. In future, he hopes he can win the honor back for his country at the Asian Games and the Olympics. All we need to do now is to wait for our new star-Chie Chen to make his dreams come true.
