Founded in 1991, National
Yunlin University of Science and Technology (YunTech) is
a flagship technological university under the leadership of the former presidents and Dr.
Hou Chun-kan. YunTech has four
colleges, the College of Engineering, College of Management, College of Design,
and College of Humanities and Applied Sciences. These four colleges account for
20 undergraduate, 26 master’s and 12 doctoral programs. The student population
is approximately 10,000. Nearly 50 percent of the 350 distinguished faculty
members received their doctoral degrees from renowned universities in Europe, the
United States and elsewhere. The average annual funding received for
industry-academia collaboration is the highest nationwide.
Introduction
to the Four Colleges
The College of
Engineering consists of 7 undergraduate, 10 master’s and 6 doctoral programs. All
programs of College of Engineering are accredited by the Institute of
Engineering Education Taiwan (IEET). The mission of the college is to develop green
science and technology and intelligent lives. The college establishes research
centers to provide services for industry evaluation, research and development. Moreover,
the students of the College of Engineering win awards at big competitions.
The College of
Management has 4 undergraduate programs, 1 undergraduate program in international
management, 8 master’s and 4 doctoral programs. All programs of the College of
Management are accredited by Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of
Business (AACSB) and Accreditation of Chinese Collegiate School of Business
(ACCSB), which make it the only technological university in central Taiwan accredited
both by the AACSB and ACCSB. The mission of the college is to cultivate
professional management personnel who are well-qualified in both theory and
practice. Practical projects competitions, overseas internships, Harvard case
studies, industry-academia programs are included in courses to meet the
mission.
There are 5 undergraduate,
5 master’s, 1 doctoral program and 2 research centers of the College of Design.
The mission of the college is to develop cultural and creative industry,
digital application and cross-disciplinary design. The teams grouped by staff
members and students win awards at Red Dot Award, iF Design Awards and other
international design competitions. In addition, the college is ranked the 7th
among other universities in Asia area by Red Dot Award in 2015.
The College of Humanities
and Applied Sciences consists of 2 undergraduate, 7 master’s, 1 doctoral
programs and 2 affiliated education centers which are established to promote
ethics, philosophy and life education. The two education centers are General
Education Center and Teacher Education Center. The college is honored by the
Ministry of Education (R.O.C.) as one of the best university for its life
education, ethics education, general education and labor education.
Campus
environment
Situated in Douliu with a campus that spreads out over
58 hectares landscaped with trees, flowers and green lawns,
YunTech
is a model green university in Taiwan. As a result of its efforts in reusing
resources, YunTech was granted the “Energy Saving Award” by Ministry of
Economic Affairs (R.O.C.).
The library totals 16,529 square meters and already has 1,730,000 volumes in its
collection which include journals in Chinese and other languages, e-database
and e-learning resources. Located in the library, the
Art Center of YunTech periodically holds exhibitions to build an art learning
environment.
With 15 hectares of recreation space and providing complete
facilities on campus, YunTech holds the National Universiade Sport Games in
both 2006 and 2014.

universities, YunTech establishes the “YunTech Excellent Teaching Award” to
honor teachers who are devoted to teaching and voted online by students.
YunTech offers a
comprehensive selection of curricula that is outcome-based, focuses on
effective PDCA management, and aims to hone students’ interdisciplinary skills
in academics, leadership and public service. Furthermore, YunTech encourages
students to have exchange programs and to be international volunteers to
broaden their vision of the world.
YunTech encourages students
to take internships in the industrial sector, serve as overseas volunteers,
show respect to their teachers, and life education to foster their soft power.
As part of YunTech’s curriculum,
volunteer work has become an indispensable aspect of the students’ development.
Furthermore, a variety of international programs and exchange programs provide
students with a global vision and prepare them for global competitiveness and
mobility.
From 2014 to 2015, YunTech
students won 55 gold medals, 50 silver, 23 bronze and 24 special awards at
various national and international competitions, showcasing their world-class
competitiveness.
For the MOE Teaching
Excellence Project, YunTech received the highest funding among all
technological universities nationwide.
Cooperation with Industries
Government-University-Industry
Alliances: YunTech has built government-university-industry strategic alliances by actively visiting industrial sectors every month and conducting
exchange activities.
Inter-disciplinary Cooperation: four academic-industrial centers on
industrial development have been established. These are the Great Center, Smart
Life and Automatic Center, Center of Bike and Health Leisure Industry and The
Development Center of Cultural and Creative Industries. With these centers,
YunTech is becoming a paradigm for university-industry cooperation.
Maxxis Academics: Cooperating with this top ten tire brand in the
world, YunTech integrates vocational education and college courses so as to
foster on-the-job training. Also, YunTech cooperates with China Steel
Corporation to establish a research center which is focused on hand tools
One Stop Counseling Services: By matching techniques transformation
and entrepreneurship, the invented products are merchandized. The teams grouped
by staff members and students will be selected for the commercial values of the
products. 6 companies are established.
A Globalized YunTech
YunTech signed a memorandum
of agreement with 222 foreign universities from 28 countries with which it
operates university-to-university exchanges. To broaden the students’ global
vision, YunTech has built a bilingual environment, opened English-taught
courses, held international exchange programs, held learning away home programs
and held overseas internships. Through international exchanges and recruitment
of international students by establishing overseas programs, students are
encouraged to have international exchanges with their international peers.
The enrollment rate of international students accounts for more than
7% of the student population, making YunTech truly globalized.
Future Prospect
Established for 25 years,
YunTech is delighted to be ranked the highest among all technological universities
in Taiwan for MOE Teaching Excellence Project. For the “Subsidy Directions for
Developing Technological University Paradigms,” YunTech received the highest
among all technological universities nationwide. YunTech was ranked 74th among
the top 100 universities across the Taiwan Strait according to a survey
released by Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Through the university’s traditional
and core values, “Sincerity, Honor, Perseverance and Originality”, YunTech
fosters students into professionals who have knowledge-management ability, are
internationally competitive and place an equal emphasis on humanities and
technology. In the future, it seeks to keep promoting its role to be recognized
worldwide and become a research/teaching driven university focused on theory
and practice and also on technology and humanities.
