YAMAHA and KIA Join Campus to Showcase Future Mobility Design
The 2026 Design Week of the Department of Industrial Design at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (NYUST) officially opened on June 22 and will run until June 26. This year’s exhibition continues the department’s tradition of a comprehensive annual showcase, featuring learning outcomes from students across all academic years—from first-year undergraduates to graduate students—within core design courses. It also integrates the annual “International Vehicle Design Workshop Final Presentation,” bringing together student works, industry collaborations, vehicle design projects, and new car experiences in a unified exhibition space. The event highlights the department’s strong educational capacity in future mobility design.
The Design Week is a signature annual event organized collaboratively by faculty and students of the Department of Industrial Design. Through exhibition planning, curatorial design, event coordination, and project presentations, students from different academic levels are able to observe, exchange ideas, and learn from one another. This year, the exhibition has been further expanded to combine departmental works with outcomes from the International Vehicle Design Workshop, allowing visitors to not only view final design results but also gain insight into the full design process—from concept ideation and model making to user scenario development and industry collaboration.
In this year’s International Vehicle Design Workshop, the morning session featured a presentation of collaborative outcomes developed over the past year with YAMAHA, showcasing students’ creative proposals and hands-on capabilities in vehicle design. In the afternoon, YAMAHA delivered a keynote lecture, sharing industry perspectives on mobility design trends, brand thinking, and future mobility visions. This provided students with direct exposure to international industry practices and deepened their understanding of the transportation design sector.
In addition to the collaboration with YAMAHA, this year’s Design Week also received support from KIA, which provided three brand-new vehicles for exhibition at the Department of Industrial Design, including one electric vehicle. During the exhibition period, faculty and students were able to closely observe the vehicles, examining proportions, interior configurations, interface design, material applications, and the design language of electric mobility. This hands-on access allowed students to better understand how automotive design responds to technology, lifestyle changes, and sustainability trends. For industrial design students, this experience served not only as a vehicle showcase but also as a valuable real-world design learning resource.
Department Chair Ma Yong-Chuan stated that design education should extend beyond classrooms and drawings, enabling students to engage directly with real-world industry environments, brands, technologies, and markets. Through the integration of the departmental exhibition, the International Vehicle Design Workshop presentation, the YAMAHA keynote lecture, and KIA’s vehicle showcase, students are able to simultaneously observe peer works, industry collaboration outcomes, and global automotive design trends within a single week. This holistic experience further strengthens their understanding of the role of design in future mobility, lifestyle innovation, and industrial development.
The 2026 NYUST Industrial Design Week is held from June 22 to June 26 at the Department of Industrial Design, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology. Faculty, students, design professionals, and members of the public interested in vehicle design, product design, and future mobility trends are warmly invited to visit and experience the creative energy of emerging designers and the department’s continued efforts in strengthening industry–academia collaboration.
