Chemistry and AI Empower Industrial Intellectual Property Competition at YunTech's Graduate School of Materials Science and Technology

Chemistry and AI Empower Industrial Intellectual Property Competition at YunTech's Graduate School of Materials Science and Technology

The Graduate School of Materials Science and Technology at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (YunTech) continues to advance Taiwan's internationalization through global engagement and industry-academia collaboration while remaining deeply committed to strengthening foundational science education. The institute has long supported the University's general education curriculum by offering General Physics, General Chemistry, Physics Laboratory, and Chemistry Laboratory courses. Building upon its innovative chemistry education model, the program integrates industrial AI software, big data analytics, and intellectual property (IP) applications into interdisciplinary teaching, equipping students with enhanced professional competencies and greater career competitiveness. The Chemistry and AI Empower Industrial Intellectual Property Competition was organized by Professor Mei-Hsin Wang with funding support from the Ministry of Education's Higher Education Sprout Project.

Chemistry serves as the invisible engine driving the evolution of life and modern civilization. From consumer healthcare products and pharmaceuticals to precision chemical manufacturing in high-tech industries, chemistry forms the foundation of contemporary society. It is indispensable in advanced defense technologies—including high-energy propellants, stealth technologies, detection systems, and controlled explosives—as well as semiconductor manufacturing, where every stage, from photoresists, chip performance optimization, thermal management materials, and sensing films to packaging technologies, relies heavily on specialty chemicals and advanced chemical innovations.

For this competition, participating teams selected recent cases from the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit as their research topics. Using Taiwan's Global Patent Search System (GPSS), students analyzed the global patent portfolios of the companies involved in the cases. They also employed the European Patent Office's IPscore tool to evaluate patent legal status, market potential, financial considerations, strategic value, opportunities, risks, and intellectual property management.

Students further utilized a wide range of AI platforms—including Claude AI, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity, ChatGPT, Kimi, IMA, Quark, Zhipu Qingyan, ERNIE Bot, Qwen, DeepSeek, Grok, MetaLaw, NotebookLM, Mindshow, and others—to analyze the companies, understand the patented technologies and their applications, overcome language barriers, and interpret legal case summaries and technical documentation. Through this process, participants gained firsthand insight into the technological significance and business strategies behind chemical patents that companies invest millions of U.S. dollars to defend through litigation.

The competition was further enriched through integration with lectures from the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Summer School, providing students with valuable international learning opportunities. Although Taiwan is not a member of WIPO, Academician Mei-Hsin Wang has served as a WIPO Summer School instructor since 2020, enabling YunTech students to participate in WIPO educational programs and engage with leading scholars and professionals from around the world. The competition combines technological insight, legal strategy, and business management in an interdisciplinary learning environment. By incorporating multiple AI tools and emphasizing teamwork, oral presentation skills, and strategic thinking, students develop practical workplace competencies while gaining a comprehensive understanding of chemistry's broad impact across industrial production and everyday life. Sustainability is also incorporated into intellectual property protection strategies, reinforcing collaborative problem-solving and responsible innovation.

The competition was evaluated by a distinguished panel of industry leaders and academic experts, including representatives from IEI Integration Corp., Kenmec Mechanical Engineering Co., Ltd., Getac Technology Corporation, Revive Medical Technologies Co., Ltd., the Chinese Biomedical Technology Application Association, U-Lon Enterprise Co., Ltd., Yeh Ching Precision Forging Co., Ltd., Genesis Capital, KISSME Taiwan Co., Ltd., Via Licensing Alliance, NeoEnergy Technology Co., Ltd., Pharma International Patent & Trademark Office, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, National Cheng Kung University Hospital, National Cheng Kung University, Taipei Medical University Hospital, the Ministry of Health and Welfare Taoyuan Hospital, National Taiwan University Hospital, GrandFlow Intellectual Property Office, GrandFlow Law Office, Taipei Medical University, Academia Sinica, National Taipei University of Technology, and many other distinguished organizations.

As part of the competition's training program, students also gained access to a suite of industry-leading engineering software licensed through Siemens Digital Industries Software and OTSUKA Information Technology Corp., including:

  • Autodesk Moldflow – Advanced plastic injection molding simulation powered by comprehensive materials databases, enabling predictive engineering, waste reduction, and sustainable manufacturing.
  • Solid Edge – An AI-driven design and cloud collaboration platform featuring synchronous technology for rapid design modification and generative engineering.
  • Siemens NX – A high-end integrated CAD/CAM/CAE platform widely used in aerospace and semiconductor industries for advanced product development and precision manufacturing.
  • PADS Professional – Professional electronic design automation software supporting high-density interconnect (HDI) design and signal integrity verification for next-generation electronic products.
  • Simcenter Flotherm – A thermal simulation platform designed for AI servers and high-performance computing (HPC), enabling precise thermal management and cooling optimization.

Professor Yuan-Tsung Chen, Director of the Graduate School of Materials Science and Technology, noted that YunTech President Chuan-Yu Chang places strong emphasis on the transformative impact of artificial intelligence on future industries and society. In response, academic units across the University are actively integrating AI technologies into their curricula, ensuring that students are well prepared for the rapidly evolving technological landscape.
