Calligrapher Chang Shang-Wei Donates Masterpieces by Renowned Taiwanese Artists, Enriching YunTech’s Art Collection

Acquisition of a Rare Chen Cheng-Po Work Adds Historical and Scholarly Value

Calligrapher and art collector Chang Shang-Wei has long been dedicated to both art collecting and artistic creation. Committed to promoting the appreciation of poetry, calligraphy, and painting through publishing, he has authored and published 26 books to date. His deep artistic foundation stems from a family tradition of cultural cultivation. His great-grandfather was the renowned Confucian physician Lin Yu-Shu (courtesy name Woyun) from Chiayi, while his grandfather, Chang Chang-Rong, was also an avid art collector. Notably, Lotus Pond by Lin Yu-Shan, now one of the signature works in the collection of the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, was once part of his grandfather’s collection.

Influenced by this rich family heritage from an early age, Chang aspired to become an art collector and gradually evolved from a collector into a creator, developing an even greater appreciation for the production, preservation, and transmission of art. On June 5, 2026, he generously donated five works by prominent Taiwanese artists from his personal collection to National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (YunTech). Motivated by a desire to promote arts and culture, this meaningful donation transforms private treasures into public cultural assets, embodying a spirit of cultural stewardship and public sharing.

The donated works represent several influential figures in Taiwan’s modern art history, including Chen Cheng-Po, Liu Hsin-Lu, Liao Chi-Chun, and Chang Yi-Hsiung. Spanning different periods and artistic styles, the collection significantly enhances YunTech’s art holdings while providing valuable resources for the study of Taiwanese art history. These works possess both considerable historical significance and outstanding artistic merit.

Among the donated pieces, the work by Chen Cheng-Po is particularly noteworthy. As a pioneering figure in Taiwanese art history, Chen’s life and artistic career were deeply intertwined with the social and historical transformations of his era, lending profound historical meaning to his works. The donated painting is believed to correspond with themes and creative contexts related to his pre-war and post-war periods. Both its composition and subject matter offer substantial research value, providing important insights into the social landscape and artistic development of the time.

Also included is a work by Liu Hsin-Lu, a contemporary of Chen Cheng-Po. Both artists engaged in plein-air painting during their time in China, and similarities in their styles and compositions offer valuable opportunities for comparative academic study. Housing these works together within the university’s collection will further support scholarly exploration of their artistic relationships and historical contexts.

In addition, the work by Liao Chi-Chun reflects his artistic evolution from early influences of Post-Impressionism toward a synthesis of abstraction and modernism, illustrating broader transformations in Taiwan’s post-war art scene. The painting by Chang Yi-Hsiung, renowned for its vibrant use of color and expressive treatment of light, showcases the distinctive artistic language he developed during his years living abroad. Collectively, these works present a comprehensive view of the diversity and development of modern and contemporary Taiwanese painting while holding significant positions within Taiwan’s art historical narrative.

YunTech President Chang Chuan-Yu expressed his appreciation for the donation, noting that it not only enriches the university’s cultural environment and artistic heritage but also provides invaluable resources for teaching and research across related disciplines. He emphasized that the collection will contribute meaningfully to the preservation of Taiwan’s art history, the advancement of arts education, and the promotion of regional cultural development. This generous gift exemplifies the spirit of transforming private collections into shared cultural resources and marks an important milestone in the preservation and transmission of Taiwan’s artistic heritage.
