Life Warrior Inspires Campus Community: Wheelchair Dancer Cheng Tzu-Chiang Shares His Journey of Overcoming Adversity

To promote the values of special education and deepen understanding of disability-related issues on campus, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology held the keynote lecture “Life Warrior: Wheels in Motion Across Campus” on the morning of May 20, 2026, at YunTai Performance Hall. The university invited renowned wheelchair dancer and life education speaker Cheng Tzu-Chiang to share his personal life story, encouraging faculty members and students to reflect on the idea that “the greatest obstacle is not the body, but the mind.”

Cheng Tzu-Chiang, who is of Amis Indigenous heritage, contracted polio during childhood. Due to delayed medical treatment, doctors determined that he would rely on a wheelchair for the rest of his life. Throughout his early years, he experienced social exclusion because of his disability and struggled with self-doubt and depression.

During his teenage years, he enrolled at the Jen-Ai Experimental School in Changhua, where he was first introduced to wheelchair dancing. Through dance, he gradually discovered a sense of self-worth and a new direction in life.

However, his journey was far from easy. Cheng openly shared that, during his youth, emotional frustration once led him to become a troubled student. It was only through the guidance of teachers and his dedication to wheelchair dance that he gradually transformed negative emotions into personal strength. Through continuous practice and performance, he rebuilt his confidence and found his place on the stage.

In 2014, he appeared on a major televised talent competition and distinguished himself among tens of thousands of contestants, demonstrating remarkable resilience and artistic talent while challenging public stereotypes surrounding people with disabilities.

Today, Cheng Tzu-Chiang serves as a radio host for the Indigenous Peoples Cultural Foundation’s broadcasting platform and director of the Wheel Future Performing Arts Workshop. He also remains deeply committed to promoting life education, using his experiences to encourage others to confront challenges, embrace differences, and recognize the potential within themselves to overcome limitations.

The lecture was jointly organized by the Counseling and Guidance Center and the Office of Student Affairs at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology in conjunction with the sophomore student assembly program. Centered on the theme “Open Your Heart and Embrace the Light,” the event aimed to foster greater understanding and respect for diversity on campus while inspiring students to face challenges with courage.

Through this event, participants were encouraged to reconsider the meaning of “limitations” and to recognize that the barriers preventing personal growth are often not external circumstances, but internal self-imposed restrictions. Through the life story of Cheng Tzu-Chiang, the university hopes to continue cultivating a positive, inclusive, and supportive campus environment.
