Lai Hsiang-Wei, a student with autism, will present his “Music for a Beautiful Life — Lai Hsiang-Wei Life Education Graduation Concert” on Saturday, April 25, 2026, at 2:00 PM in the YunChuang Hall of the Arts Center at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology. The event is open to the public with free admission, and audiences from all sectors are warmly invited to experience a moving performance that intertwines music with a personal life story.
The concert is jointly organized by the Center for General Education at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology and the Department of Ethnomusicology at Nanhua University. In addition to supporting the course “Entering Aesthetics through Everyday Life,” which encourages students to cultivate empathy and a deeper appreciation of life, the event also serves as Lai’s graduation recital at Nanhua University, marking a meaningful milestone in his personal journey.
Born in 2001, Lai was diagnosed with moderate autism in early childhood. With the long-term support and patient guidance of his family, he began exploring music and gradually developed confidence and expressive ability through piano study. Through discipline and perseverance, he has overcome numerous challenges in both learning and daily life, using music as a bridge to connect with the world.
Beyond his artistic achievements, Lai has received widespread recognition for his academic performance and determination. His honors include the 2017 Presidential Education Award, the Yunlin Cultural and Arts Award, and the Ministry of Education Outstanding Student Award for Perseverance. He has also distinguished himself in numerous national and international competitions, earning accolades such as the Grand Performance Award at the Hong Kong “Stars of Talent” Arts Showcase, the Plum Blossom Award in the instrumental category of the Fubon Talent Awards for Persons with Disabilities, and the Manchun Award in the instrumental performance category of the Wan Hai Charity Talent Competition for Persons with Disabilities. He has become an inspiring role model in both music and life education.
The concert program spans both classical and contemporary repertoire, featuring works for piano and violin that highlight Lai’s diverse musical training and stage experience. Under the theme “Music for a Beautiful Life,” the performance not only demonstrates his technical artistry but also conveys his passion for life and aspirations for the future. The organizers hope that this concert will illuminate the profound impact of music education in special education and invite the public to attend and witness a deeply moving story shaped by dedication and love for music.
