Outstanding Student Counseling Programs from Across Taiwan Gather at YunTech to Shape a New Model for Student Support in Higher Education

The results of the Ministry of Education’s 2025 Evaluation of Student Counseling Services at Public and Private Colleges and Universities have been announced. National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (YunTech) received an “Outstanding” rating in recognition of its comprehensive university-wide counseling system, diverse and innovative approaches to promoting mental health, and sustained efforts in student support. The recognition highlights YunTech’s long-term commitment to students’ mental well-being and holistic development, while demonstrating the University’s efforts to integrate student support into its overall educational mission and continuously enhance the quality of education.

To share the experiences and practices of outstanding institutions, the Ministry of Education’s “2025 Outstanding Institutions’ Best Practices Sharing Event for the Evaluation of Student Counseling Services at Colleges and Universities” was held on September 22, 2026, at YunTech’s International Conference Hall. The event brought together five institutions recognized for outstanding performance—National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, National Kaohsiung Normal University, Yuan Ze University, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, and Chang Gung University of Science and Technology—along with student counseling professionals from colleges and universities across Taiwan. Hui-Wen Chang, Section Chief of the Department of Student and Special Education of the Ministry of Education; Associate Professor Wei-Chi Chung, Principal Investigator of the Evaluation Project; and Professor Hui-Mei Wei, Co-Principal Investigator, also attended the event. They recognized the participating institutions for their continued efforts to strengthen student counseling and support services and to create campus environments conducive to students’ learning and personal development.

Following its recognition as an outstanding institution in the evaluation, YunTech also served as a platform for sharing its experience. The evaluation committee particularly recognized the University’s three-tier counseling framework, which integrates administrative units, colleges and departments, faculty advisors, and professional counseling personnel to put the principle of “counseling by the entire university community” into practice. This approach has established a stable and well-developed system of collaboration across campus. YunTech has also demonstrated sustained commitment and continuous improvement in addressing student needs, strengthening professional support, and integrating resources both within and beyond the University.

University education extends beyond developing professional knowledge and practical skills. It should also provide a supportive campus environment in which students can navigate challenges related to learning, daily life, and personal development. In recent years, YunTech has continued to expand mental health education into different areas of campus life, from courses and activities to everyday experiences, gradually building a comprehensive student support environment. This approach gives students opportunities to develop mental health awareness, better understand themselves, and build the skills needed to manage stress and interpersonal relationships before they encounter situations in which they require assistance. When students learn in an environment where support is accessible and help-seeking is encouraged, they are better positioned to explore their academic and professional interests with confidence, develop their potential, and build a stable foundation for their future.

At the event, YunTech Vice President Fei-Chuan Chen delivered a presentation titled “Bringing Mental Health into Everyday Campus Life: Innovative Promotion through Diverse Media and Experiential Activities.” She shared how YunTech uses interactive experiences, diverse media, and activities closely connected to students’ daily lives to make mental health issues more approachable and accessible. The University has also incorporated Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) into “Career Navigation,” a required first-year course. From the beginning of their university journey, students have opportunities to develop self-awareness, interpersonal skills, emotional regulation, and responsible decision-making. In this way, mental health education extends beyond professional services and becomes an integral part of students’ learning experiences, highlighting YunTech’s distinctive approach to integrating mental health with student learning.

In addition to YunTech, the other outstanding institutions shared their experiences in student counseling and support. Their presentations covered areas including student counseling, university-wide support systems, the development of supportive mental health environments, and Social and Emotional Learning (SEL), demonstrating the diverse approaches developed by each institution in response to its own campus characteristics and student needs. Through presentations and on-site discussions, participants gained insights into practical strategies adopted in different campus contexts and identified approaches that could serve as references for their own work, strengthening the exchange and collective development of student counseling practices across institutions.

The event provided an important opportunity for participating institutions to exchange experiences in student counseling and further strengthen practices related to student support and care. Looking ahead, YunTech will continue to uphold its student-centered educational philosophy by integrating teaching, counseling, and campus support systems. Alongside nurturing professional talent, the University will remain committed to students’ mental health, adjustment to university life, and holistic development. YunTech hopes to ensure that every student can learn with confidence, explore their potential, and develop the capabilities needed for the future in a campus environment rich in support and opportunities for growth. Through professional practice and continued inter-university collaboration, YunTech will also continue contributing to the advancement of student counseling and support in higher education.
