The Yuntai Theater at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology (YunTech) will host the Ming Hwa Yuan Arts & Culture Group on January 24, presenting an all-new production titled
“Reincarnated Into Another World as Jiaqing Emperor – Finding Out My Ancestors Were a Fraud Syndicate!?”
This time-travel comedy intertwines with a historical land fraud case from the Qing Dynasty, offering an innovative theatrical experience that overturns conventional expectations.
This production is created by Ming Hwa Yuan, directed by Sung Hou-Kuan, winner of the Taishin Arts Award, with script by Tsai Yi-Hsuan, nominee for the Golden Melody Awards for Traditional Arts.
The performance features leading stars Sun Tsui-Feng, the renowned “Invincible Sheng,” and Sun Rong-Hui, the celebrated martial-role champion, with members of the Ming Hwa Yuan theater family joining the cast.
This exceptional lineup promises a theatrical experience that blends entertainment, historical depth, and cultural reflection.
Inspired by the well-known folk tale “The Jiaqing Emperor’s Tour of Taiwan,” the storyline merges historical facts with fictional imagination. Using a “court theater playbill” structure, it introduces a play-within-a-play format where contradictory character narratives blur the line between truth and fabrication.
The plot expands into themes of time travel and the multiverse, questioning whether altering the past might change the future—and even speculating whether the Jiaqing Emperor truly set foot in Taiwan.
The story draws from a real estate fraud case in Yilan during the Jiaqing period, with the protagonist moving between past and present to create dramatic tension across eras.
Ming Hwa Yuan skillfully merges modern theatrical performance with traditional Taiwanese opera singing, movement, and martial arts.
The stage design contrasts stylized and realistic elements, while differences between palace life and everyday folk life—along with intersecting roles and interests—highlight reflections on human nature and social dynamics.
The performance aims not only to bring high-quality, national-level theatrical art to Yunlin, but also to give local residents and YunTech students the opportunity to experience contemporary traditional opera creations, fostering arts education and strengthening ties between traditional opera and younger generations.
